  • Ashraf al-ʿAshmāwī (?, Egypt) – Tūyā (‘Toya’, 2012). Set in the 1970s, this novel tells the story of the young Yūsuf, who is enrolled in medical school in England, the birth country of his mother. As a part of his PhD education, he travels to Kenya to research leprosy. He soon he meets Tūyā, a member from the Kikuyu tribe with whom he falls in love. But their relationship is challenged by huge differences in their characters and social and cultural context.
