Cities have been a primary location in the Contemporary Arab(ic) literature. The city serves as a nurturer to its inhabitants, a refuge for rural and foreign migrants and outsiders, a place for change and education, and a center of government institutions. Literature throughout the Arab world portrays a generation of young people who attend schools and universities in cities to return to their homes facing tradition and entrenched interests. In respect to government institutions, many capital cities are home to a nation’s government. It is from the city that societal agenda is imposed on the villages and on rural life. This category will look at novels set in specific cities throughout the Arab-majority world.
