Khartoum

  • ʿAzzaldīn Shukrī Fashīr (1966-, Egypt) – Ghurfat al-ʿInāyah al-Markaziyyah (‘Intensive Care Unit’, 2008). When the Egyptian consulate in Khartoum is blown-up by jihadis, three people find themselves caught in the rubble. While waiting for rescue, they discuss and reflect on their lives, as well as their socio-political environment.

  • Ḥishām Hilālī’s (1986-, Sudan) short story collection Ayyām al-Kharṭūm al-Akhīrah (‘The last days of Khartoum’, 2019) portrays daily life in Sudan’s capital city as well as stories about the relationships between Sudan and the Arab region at large. The stories in the novel are rather gloomy, as they show the tragic side of its characters. Looking at the region at large, Hilālī in one of the stories for example reflects on the occupation of Iraq.
  • Rānyā Maʾmūn’ (1979-, Sudan) short story collection Thalāthat ʿAshr Shahran Min Ishrāq al-Shams (2009, English trans. Thirteen Months of Sunrise, 2019). This debut collection includes ten stories depicting daily life in Khartoum. Its characters include a young woman sitting by her father’s deathbed, a Sudanese narrator who befriends someone from Ethiopia with whom she buys Sudanese music, and a struggling writer who wanders around the city in search of inspiration.
  • The Book of Khartoum (2016) eds. by Raph Cormack and Max Shmookler is a collection of short stories from different Sudanese authors translated by different translators that focus on the city of Khartoum. It features among others Bushra al-Fadil, Isa al-Hilu and Riana Mamūn. The Book of Cairo is part of Comma Press’ ‘Reading the City’ collection that also includes The Book of Cairo and The Book of Gaza (see above in Palestine).
