- Yūsuf Idrīs’ (1927 – 1991, Egypt) short story ‘Aḥmad al-Majlis al-Baladī’ (‘Ahmed of the Local Council’) focusses on Aḥmad al-ʿUqlah, a shop owner with one leg who never shies away from helping his fellow villagers. But his villagers are not as helpful towards him. One day, Aḥmad disappears to Cairo and returns with a prosthetic leg. The short story describes how Aḥmad visiting Cairo and returns having ‘two legs’ changes his personality and activities in the village. The short story can be found in the collection Ākhir al-Dunyā (‘End of the word’, 1961).
