- Andrée Chedid (1920 – 2011, Lebanon) – Le sixième jour (1960, English trans. The Sixth Day, 1988). This novel, which was turned into a 1986 movie directed by Youssef Chahine, takes place in Cairo during the 1948 cholera epidemic. It centers the grandmother Saddika, who raises her grandchild while also taking care of her paralyzed husband.
