2006 Lebanon War

  • Alīksandrā Shrītiḥ (1987-, Lebanon) – ʿAlī wa Ummuhu al-Rūsiyya (2010, English trans. Ali and His Russian Mother, 2015). Following the Israeli invasion of 2006 an unnamed female character and ʿAlī, both of Russian mothers and Lebanese fathers, join Russian nationals on an evacuation journey organized by the Russian Embassy (reference). The novel describes ʿAlī’s struggles with the death and destruction of the war and with his homosexuality, mixed ethnicity and Jewish heritage (reference) (also in R: Religion and Sectarianism: Judaism and Arab- Jew relationships and L: Love, Lust, and Relationships: LGBTQ+: Male Homosexuality).
  • Māzin Karbāj (1975- , Lebanon) – Bayrūt Lantabkī: Yamīyāt Ḥarb Tamayyuz 2006 (2016, English trans. Beirut won’t Cry, 2017). This graphic novel by the Lebanese jazz-artist, painter and writer portrays the 2006 Lebanon War in a creative chronicle of drawings, comics and writing, and reflects on his own and his family’s situation as violence engulfs Beirut.
  • Fātin al-Murr (1969-, Lebanon) – al-Khaṭāyā al-Shāʾʿah (‘Common sins’, 2010). The novel revolves around the resistance in southern Lebanon against Israel, including suicide attacks, and the perspective of the West on these developments. It is presented through the story of the English Mārī Krīstīn, who discovers that her late father was from Lebanon, and she has a half-sister from his side of the family who carried out a suicide attack. She travels to Lebanon to find out more about her roots and her family.
