1911 – 1947 Italian rule of Libya

  • Alessandro Spina (pen name of Basili Shafik Khouzam, Libya / Syria, 1927 – 2013) published a chronicle in Italian from the 1960s onwards titled I confine dell’ombra (2006- English trans. Confines of the Shadow), which entails seven novels and four short story collections on Libya’s history from the Italo – Turkish War in 1911, al through Libya’s colonial history, up until the discovery of Libya’s oil fields in 1964. The eleven literary works are divided into three volumes that are each translated or being translated by Andre Naffid-Sahely.

The first installment, I confine dell’ombra. In terra d’oltremare (English trans. The Confines of the Shadows Volume 1. In Lands Overseas, 2019, and The Colonial Conquest: The Confines of the Shadow Volume I, 2019) is set between 1912 – 1927. The second volume translated as The Fourth Shore: The Confines of the Shadow Volume II (2019) is set between late 1920s and the end of World War II. The third volume covers the remaining period until 1964 but has not yet been translated to English.
